3 important vaccines every senior should know about

As a doctor I see many patients who are confused about shots after they turn 65. Most people think vaccines are just for kids but that is not true at all. Our immune system gets a bit tired as we age so we need to give it some extra support.

In 2026 Medicare has made it much easier for all of us because most of these vaccines won’t cost you a single penny. Here are the three I always tell my patients to get.

The Shingles vaccine is a must

If you have ever had chickenpox the virus stays inside you and can come back as a painful rash called shingles.

I have seen how much pain it causes and it can last for months. The good news is that under Medicare Part D the Shingrix vaccine is now free.

If you are over 50 or 65 please go and get it. It is much better to prevent the pain than to treat it later.

Don’t ignore the RSV vaccine

RSV used to be known as a kids disease but it is actually very serious for seniors too.

It affects your breathing and can lead to hospital visits. Now that Medicare covers this shot under Part D there is no reason to take a risk with your health.

It is a simple way to stay safe during the winter months.

Get the high dose flu shot

Every year the flu changes and so should your protection. For my patients over 65 I never recommend the regular flu shot.

Always ask for the high dose version because it is specifically made to give seniors a stronger shield.

October is usually the best time to get this done.

My final advice for you

At the end of the day my goal as a doctor is to keep you out of the hospital so you can enjoy your life with your family.

These vaccines are a huge part of that. Take a moment this week to talk to your local pharmacist or give me a call. Your health is your biggest asset so let’s protect it together.
